Teaching Experience

I give lessons in both electric and acoustic guitar and have been teaching on a one to one basis since 1987.

From 1996 – 2009 I was programme leader for courses in popular music at National Diploma and HNC/D level at City College Manchester (now The Manchester College). I have examined for the Registry Of Guitar Tutors/London College of Music (2005-2007) and the ROCKSCHOOL Examination Board (2007-2015) where I examined all instruments from Debut Grade to Diploma level. I examined extensively throughout the UK and Europe which has given me an excellent grasp on international standards in music education.

I have been directly involved in programme design at Further and Higher Education level writing and co-writing modules including Music Language, Music Performance, Improvisation, Composition and Instrumental Tuition. I authored some chapters in the open learning workbooks used on the government’s New Deal For Musicians programme run by Armstrong Learning. I was also an advisor on the London College of Music’s Popular Music Theory graded syllabus where many of my recommendations were integrated into the syllabus design.

While lecturing at City College I also worked as a reviewer for the Quality Assurance Agency (the QAA) reviewing quality of teaching and learning in the arts at higher education level.

During my time lecturing in the public education sector I consistently received the top grade (Grade 1) for all my lesson observations, both in house and for Ofsted.
