Abba Are The Enemy – Tom Hingley & The Lovers

This was the debut album from Tom Hingley & The Lovers. Released in 2004 it’s a pretty angry garage rock album where we all got to let our hair down (!).

The album was recorded on an 8 track in the “Cookfreeze” building where I used to run the HND in Music performance. We stripped right back to basics to get an authentically raw and punky sound.

“The Third Cumming” was a reference to the Stone Roses “Second Coming”, hence the Hendrix/Page guitar reference. From what I remember, few reviewers seem to get this at the time…

Tom Hingley was the front man of Manchester’s Inspiral Carpets and on bass and drums are Steve and Paul Hanley, formerly of The Fall and currently in Brix & The Extricated. We also had Kelly Wood on Farfisa and keys.
